per person
The 7-Day Rongai Route offers one of the most peaceful and gradually ascending paths up Mount Kilimanjaro, approaching from the remote northern side near the Kenya border. This route is less crowded, drier than the southern approaches, and ideal for climbers seeking a quieter wilderness experience with strong acclimatization.
Over seven days, the trail takes you through a remarkable transition of ecosystems — starting from cultivated farmland and lush montane forest, rising into open moorlands, and eventually crossing into the stark alpine desert of the “saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Each day is designed to support steady altitude gain, allowing the body to adapt gradually and improving summit success rates.
The journey’s highlight is the midnight summit ascent from Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), where climbers witness sunrise above the clouds at the Roof of Africa. After reaching the summit, the descent continues through varied landscapes back to the rainforest, completing a full circle of ecological zones.

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins on the quiet northern slopes of the mountain near the Kenyan border. After completing park formalities at Rongai Gate, you begin a gentle uphill trek through cultivated land before entering the cool montane forest.
This first section is calm and scenic, with towering trees, birdlife, and occasional sightings of black-and-white colobus monkeys. The trail rises gradually, making this an ideal introduction to the mountain while allowing your body to ease into the trekking rhythm.
By late afternoon, you emerge from the forest and reach Simba Camp, beautifully positioned on an open ridge with views stretching across the plains below.
Leaving Simba Camp behind, the trail ascends steadily through open moorland. The vegetation begins to change noticeably, with giant heathers and hardy alpine shrubs replacing the dense forest.
The views become increasingly expansive, and the sharp volcanic summit of Mawenzi Peak starts to dominate the eastern skyline. This is a pleasant acclimatization day, with a moderate pace that allows for regular rests and hydration.
Upon arrival at Second Cave Camp, the mountain atmosphere feels more dramatic and remote.
Today’s trek is shorter in distance but steeper in sections as the route winds through sheltered valleys and rugged volcanic ridges. Mawenzi Peak now appears impressively close, creating one of the most photogenic backdrops of the climb.
Because the altitude gain is modest, this day is intentionally designed to support acclimatization. The pace remains slow and steady, allowing trekkers to conserve energy while absorbing the peaceful wilderness around them.
Kikelewa Camp lies in a protected valley surrounded by giant senecios and alpine vegetation.
This morning’s ascent becomes steeper as you climb toward the base of the jagged Mawenzi Peak. The scenery shifts dramatically into an alpine desert — rocky, dry, and starkly beautiful.
As you gain altitude, the air becomes cooler and thinner, but the reward is extraordinary: Mawenzi Tarn Camp, a spectacular campsite nestled beside a small glacial tarn beneath towering black volcanic cliffs.
This is one of the most scenic overnight points on Kilimanjaro and a very important acclimatization stop.
Today you cross the vast saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, a broad, high-altitude desert that feels almost lunar in appearance. The trail is not steep, but the thin air makes every step more deliberate.
This is a quiet and contemplative trekking day as the snow-capped summit cone of Kibo stands directly ahead. Upon arrival at Kibo Hut, you will have an early dinner and spend the rest of the afternoon resting in preparation for the midnight summit ascent.
Shortly after midnight, you begin the most challenging and rewarding stage of the expedition. Trekking by headlamp under a sky filled with stars, you slowly climb steep scree slopes toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim.
As dawn breaks, the glacier fields begin to glow, and the final push along the rim leads to Uhuru Peak — the highest point in Africa and the triumphant climax of your Kilimanjaro climb.
After summit celebrations and photographs, you descend carefully back to Kibo Hut for a brief rest, then continue downward to Horombo Hut for your final night on the mountain.
Your final day is a long but comfortable descent through moorland and lush rainforest. With every step downward, the air becomes warmer and richer in oxygen, and the sounds of birds and running streams return.
At Marangu Gate, certificates are awarded to successful climbers — a proud reminder that you have stood on the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
After the celebrations, you are transferred back to your hotel.
