per person
Mount Kilimanjaro, standing at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level, is Africa’s highest mountain and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. Among all the established trekking routes, the Marangu Route is the oldest, most historic, and the only route offering overnight stays in mountain huts rather than tents, making it one of the most comfortable ways to climb this legendary peak.
Known as the famous “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu provides a gradual and scenic ascent through lush montane rainforest, giant heather moorlands, alpine desert, and the stark lunar landscapes near the summit. Though considered moderate in technical difficulty, the climb still demands determination, proper pacing, and acclimatization.
This 6-day version is highly recommended because it includes an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, greatly improving summit success and allowing climbers to better adapt to the mountain’s changing altitude.
The route follows the same trail up and down, giving trekkers the chance to appreciate every ecological zone of Kilimanjaro while enjoying the warmth and shelter of comfortable communal huts.
Marangu may be the mountain’s most established route, but reaching Uhuru Peak is still a powerful achievement requiring determination, endurance, and expert guidance. With proper acclimatization and a professional crew, this timeless route delivers an unforgettable journey to the Roof of Africa.
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our mountain team and transferred to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for overnight relaxation.
In the evening, your lead mountain guide will conduct a comprehensive climb briefing, a detailed equipment check, and a safety orientation to prepare you for the adventure ahead.
Overnight: Hotel in Moshi/Arusha
After breakfast, drive to the Marangu Gate where registration formalities are completed. The climb begins through Kilimanjaro’s rich tropical rainforest, a magical world filled with towering trees, moss-covered trunks, colourful birds, and playful blue monkeys.
The trail is gentle but steadily ascending. The forest air is cool and humid, and the sounds of the wilderness accompany every step. By afternoon, you arrive at Mandara Hut, beautifully nestled within the forest.
Leaving the rainforest behind, the landscape opens dramatically into heather and moorland. Giant groundsels and lobelias begin to dominate the scenery as the mountain reveals its higher slopes.
The views become wider, with the jagged spires of Mawenzi Peak appearing in the distance. The air grows thinner and cooler as you ascend steadily toward Horombo Hut.
Horombo is beautifully positioned on an open plateau with spectacular views in all directions.
Today is reserved for acclimatization — one of the most important factors for summit success.
After breakfast, take a gradual acclimatization hike to Zebra Rocks, a striking volcanic formation with black-and-white mineral streaks. This hike allows your body to experience higher altitude before descending back to Horombo for rest.
The afternoon is free for hydration, relaxation, and preparing for the higher alpine zone ahead.
The trail now enters the barren alpine desert, where vegetation disappears and Kilimanjaro begins to resemble another planet. Vast volcanic plains stretch between the towering cones of Mawenzi and Kibo.
The air is dry, the winds colder, and each step becomes more deliberate. This is a shorter but crucial day, allowing climbers to conserve energy for the midnight summit attempt.
Arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon, have an early dinner, rest, and prepare mentally for the final ascent.
Shortly after midnight, begin the summit push under a sky blazing with stars.
This is the most demanding stage of the expedition — a slow, steady climb over steep volcanic scree toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. The cold is intense, and the altitude is felt with every breath.
As dawn breaks over Africa, continue along the crater rim to the magnificent Uhuru Peak, the highest point on the continent.
Standing at 5,895m(19,341ft), you are now on the Roof of Africa.
After photos and celebration, descend carefully back to Kibo Hut for rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for the night.
Your final descent takes you back through moorland and lush rainforest to Marangu Gate. The oxygen-rich air, birdsong, and forest warmth feel wonderfully rejuvenating after the summit challenge.
At the gate, successful climbers receive their Kilimanjaro summit certificates before transferring back to the hotel for a well-deserved hot shower and celebration.
